You know we’re into Autumn once the schools are back! So
on the way into work this morning with the roads gridlocked,
it gave me time to think back to a meeting I had the other
day.
I spoke with an interesting lady who was starting her own
business and although she was happy to talk through her ideas,
she seemed unwilling to appreciate the importance of
professional design – in fact she thought that things would be
just as good if she designed everything she needed herself
using Microsoft Word or Powerpoint.
Sounds crazy I know, so here’s how I explained the impact
this decision could have…
So What’s Wrong With
Designing Everything in Microsoft Word?
No
matter how computer savvy you may be (and admittedly most
people these days are pretty good on the most popular software
packages) using something like Word or Powerpoint to create
your own marketing collateral for your company or business is
not the answer.
The temptation to have a crack at it yourself is strong but
will designing and printing materials yourself deliver the
image you strive for, for your company? This is not to mention
whether printing the materials yourself will be worth the time
and effort it takes.
Three Things to Consider Before
Designing and Printing it for Yourself:
- What goes through your mind when you see a scruffy sheet
of thin paper with a message in faded print done on
somebody’s printer at home? It certainly makes me wonder if
the business is stable, or if they're worth their asking
price? Does it look like they take pride in their work? I
certainly wouldn’t want any of these sorts of thoughts going
through the mind of a possible client of ours!
- Think about your competition – do they print their own
materials? Or do they use a professional, skilled design
team? Surely you want your materials to at least look as
good (if not better) than your competition's? Don’t let them
steal a march on you.
- Trusting the experts to design your marketing
communications documents is only like asking a dentist to
fix your teeth. You wouldn’t do dental surgery on yourself
so it shouldn’t be any different when it comes to the most
important aspect of your business – speaking to existing and
potential clients. Make the right impression and portray
everything your company stands for – and whatever that is,
it certainly shouldn’t be cutting corners!
